- "What is man that you remember, and the Son of man that you care for him?" (Psalm 8) This question evoked by the psalmist encapsulates all the consciousness of human frailty. But he continues: "You have made him little less than God, you crowned him with glory and honor, you gave him power over the works of your hands ..." Despite its invalidity, we are the wonder of that same creation. We are the highest expression of God's joy. To use the definition of St. Augustine, we are capax Dei, capable of God, capable of the same look of love. Being formed in His image we alone are capable of fully enjoying all that God has created. Taste -- not to consume, and then destroy -- but to continually innovate and drink to the Source of all, our God, Creator and Lord. The most human gesture that expresses this tasting, the gesture that enables one to enjoy the beauty of God as Moment, summing up in itself all the joy of creation that glorifies the Lord, the single most practical and yet most spiritual and sublime of all gestures is singing. The song makes us capable of receiving God's hand into our heart. God's hand that enables us, simply, to return to God. In the void, the chant awakens a desire for that infinity from where each of us came. Song leads straight to God
In this sense, the song is a sacred gesture. Therefore, those who have consecrated their lives to God, devote themselves often to singing.
In this spirit was born Gregorian chant, that has the gift of bringing us to the physical sensitivity of the deepness of God. This song that makes them capable of expressing both the burning thirst of inner fulfillment and the taste to make palpable its presence in the tangible world. This song explodes with grace anyone who approaches with an open heart and regenerates any human spirit that is oppressed .
How to explain the phenomenon of Gregorian chant? It is pure expression of the Spirit which renews the face of the earth. It makes us more capable of God.
